Maybe it's just my cynical streak...
But I'm wondering if part of keeping Barbaro alive as long as they did was to try and get as many semen collections from him as possible before they would be forced to put him to sleep.
Yeah, if he survived he would have been at stud anyway. But most race horse breeding anymore is done via AI anyway. So I really suspect they were doing collecting on him for as long as possible.
On edit. My mistake, turns out that race horse breeding still needs to be done the old fashioned way.
