Various grumbles
Apr. 26th, 2008 11:47 amOkay, ever since I got the replacement MacMini in December, I've been having various permissions problems. Annoying, but nothing major.....
Then it developed a problem with not completely quitting an application. And I started to take a good look at things on the drive.
And realized a problem. See, everything originally started on my G4 tower. Which originally was running OS 9. Then I got 10.0, and then 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4.
At 10.4 I migrated everything over to the original MacMini using Migration Manager. That went to 10.5
Then Apple replaced it with a newer MacMini, and I used TimeMachine on 10.5 to migrate things back. Which caused the permissions problem.
Basically, I had cruft in the weirdest places, apps I didn't use, junk in strange directories, a troubleshooting nightmare, with almost 10 years of stuff. So I copied over my home directory, and nuked the drive completely. Reformat, fresh install. Copied over the home directory this morning, re-owned the directory, and now gradually installing things again, making sure all the updates I need are the latest versions.
Time consuming, but worth it. I hope.
