Since [livejournal.com profile] selenite's an MIT grad, I thought he'd be amused by this report in the New York Times.

Rocket Scientist a Padre

San Diego pitcher Jason Szuminski became the first alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to make it to the majors.

Szuminski, 25, a right-hander who has a degree in aerospace engineering, is also a first lieutenant in the Air Force and has worked on satellite programs. After the Padres open the season at Los Angeles today, he will switch over to the active reserve tomorrow. In four minor league seasons, Szuminski (pronounced zoo-MIN-skee) was 23-12 with a 3.99 earned run average.

"I want to do more than just make it," he said. "I want to be able to pitch well and contribute to the team."

Yeah, the alumni association's web page has been babbling about him. I class him with the guy who got an English degree from MIT--not that it's a bad thing, but MIT's definitely not the best place for it.

Actually, what amused me was that, with the exception of baseball, it sounded a lot like someone I happen to know.......... ;-)
