Who in their right mind makes a "migration tool" that ISN'T BACKWARD COMPATIBLE WITH THEIR PREVIOUS VERSION????

Oh, Right, Microsoft XP......AGAIN. Seriously, how freaking hard would it have been to make the SP3 tool work with files from the SP2 version??

Mainly because Microsoft doesn't know the format for the SP2 version. What's been found during various discussions about things like the MSOOXML format is that the Microsoft development teams have no documentation on formats. They have binary libraries they can use to read and write those formats, and that's it. It was bad enough that Microsoft had to ask the Samba project for documentation on Microsoft's own networking and file-sharing protocols (the ones implemented by Samba). And I'll bet that the SP2 migration library won't properly restore to an SP3 system, so the Microsoft teams are stuck.

Yes, that's completely insane. No rational software company would do things that way. But Microsoft's proven time and again that they aren't rational.
