Arrrrgh. Would like to attend the Norwescon meeting Saturday. However, First Lego League has their orientation meeting for the parents and the girls in Mhari's Girl Scout team at the same time.

Lego Robotics and being a Girl Scout dad have to take priority. Darn it all.

How active are you in the Robotics community (lego or otherwise)? Looking for contacts in that community, Norwescon has an idea for an event, but would need people from that community to do it.

Well, Mhari's part of a Girl Scout team with First Lego League. I've ended up being a "mentor" due to my being a Lego collector. My involvement is pretty much that of any other interested or involved parent. I can nose around and find out who to talk to though :-)

That would be appreciated. Our Science guest this year is Dr Bridget Landry. From what I have read about her she is strong supporter of getting girls involved in science, math and robotics.

Makes sense. One of the reasons why the Girl Scouts have been sponsoring teams for FLL is to get girls involved in science, math, and robotics. (Granted, Mhari's a geeklet herself, but science is one of her favorite subjects in school. Next to reading......)

There's some info on the Girl Scout - First Lego League connection here:

http://www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_central/science/

Last year there were some girls who joined GS simply to be part of a team.

I passed the info on to Dana, who's handling the GS / FLL side of Mhari's team. To say she was thrilled at the idea might be an understatement. Part of the grant requirement from Girl Scouts was to do presentations and community outreach like this, and Norwescon could fit the requirement to a T.

Pat, thanks for the link. My BF's 9 year old went to Lego Robotics camp this summer and really enjoyed it. She's also active in scouting so I'm going to see if we can find this here in Maine.
