There was a flyer up in the hallways here at the institute for a noontime meeting for all interested parties to mark the "National Day of Prayer" today.

Now, while the NDP was supposed to be inclusive of all faiths, it's become more of a Evangelical/Conservative Christian-only event in the last few years, sad to say. Since the flyer made no statement on if it was for all faiths or not, I sent a polite email to the person coordinating it asking if it was open to all faiths and religions.

Her response was that it was open to "Christians of all denominations and faiths".

I blinked, and sent back another polite email explaining that my question was if it was open to all faiths, as many at the institute, myself included, are not Christian.

Her reply was that since there is no religion *but* Christianity, and since this was a "Christian Nation", no other beliefs would be allowed to take part in the event she was organizing, but could attend if they wanted.

*faceplant*

Somehow I don't think this is what the founders of this nation or the people who came up with the NDP intended. For that matter, I don't think it's what Christ himself had in mind for his followers.

*Sigh*

This has been the big topic on [livejournal.com profile] bush_sucks. Have a look over there. My comments are essentially that I'm a left-leaning Catholic (many christians wouldn't consider me a christian, which is fine by me), are that if I'd known this was the NDP, (to me that stands for New Democratic Party, the Canadian version of Labour in England) God and I would have boycotted my morning prayer ritual. God says that She didn't vote for Bush and does not endorse this event.

"Christian nation" indeed

BTW, [livejournal.com profile] americanstd says that having a flyer like that at work violates California law severely. I don't know if you're the sort who would take action, but it's actionable.

I would be interested in knowing how it does. Not that I'm thinking of taking action, but I may let HR know.....

National Day of Protestantism? *sigh* go hold circle outside the door or outiside the rooms windows if any.

No it's not what Christ had in mind. It isn't even what Paul had in mind when he twisted Christ's teachings. It is however what Fundie/Evangelicals have in their holeyer-than-anybody else minds.

I'm stickin' my placeholder right...in---here! Unfortunately I'm too busy to reply just yet but I wanted to save my spot... I gots me some ranting to do... hopefully I won't get spun up such that I end up running up and down the streets of The Saint James Infirmiry chasing narrowminded, elitest, mono-theists with a anti-social attitude of exclusivity.

I'm gonna go see of I can build a multi-launch bookapult so when next my personal philo is used by the prot-ass-tants (not to be confused with its parent group, the Protestant leftovers of the Reformation) as rectum squeegee I can launch hundreds and hundreds of "Holy &*(*& Flying Bibles" at them... Hardcover editions of course. I think there would be something apropriate about witnessing those Prot-ass-hats being struck down by the "Word of God".

Gotta go before it becomes a rant...

(To be continued... )

he he he. I think I heard your head hit the desk all the way in Illinois. I guess that's why I've given up trying to understand the world and just be my own me. Let them do what they want as long as they leave me alone.
