Writer Scott Farrell, who does the Chivalry Today website, has a interesting article up regarding the Iraqi abuse scandal.

The Road to Abu Ghraib - Chivalry, Mercy and Self-Restraint.

Food for thought, especially if one is mostly familar with Mr. Farrell's humourous writings.

Two fallacies appear, here. Namely, that the war in Iraq has ANYTHING to do with the "war on terrorism" other than to make it worse and two, that the U.S. ever signed the Geneva convention, which it did not.

A granted on the first, though it is a common mistake. However, the US did ratify the original Geneva Convention on 2 July 1955. We do, however, have a reservation / declaration on the original, which is a "unilateral statement, however phrased or named, made by a State when ratifying, acceding or succeeding to a treaty, whereby it purports to exclude or to modify the legal effect of certain provisions of the treaty in their application to that State (provided that such reservations are not incompatible with the object and purpose of the treaty)."

We have not, however, ratified Protocol I and II of the Geneva Convention.
