Time to switch to backup brain......
Aug. 24th, 2004 12:59 pmI jokingly call my Handspring Visor Prism my "brain", because of the amount of day-to-day information I keep on it.
Well, I had been noticing that the battery wasn't holding a charge very well anymore. And the digitizer didn't always react. Annoyances, but nothing to severe.
Until the unit failed completely a few weeks ago.
Well, figured it was worth a new battery, so ordered it.
That solved the battery problem. None of the rest. Even a hot sync and dumping the memory failed. In effect, the unit is broken.
(grumble)
I just was given a Handspring Visor Prism that I had intended to give to a friend who is trying to set up her own business. That's on hold now - she told me to go ahead and use that one as a replacement for mine.
Meanwhile, trying to decide to get the old "brain" fixed, (the new one has all my data on it), or simply try to get a newer on eBay. Or even spending the money to get it fixed *and* get the 16MB upgrade for it as well.
Bother. Problem is I use the bloody thing too much.

Date: 2004-08-24 01:58 pm (UTC)The entire unit went "plotz", or just the digitizer portion (i.e. you can still light it up, it still has the built-ins, etc.)?
If it's just the digitizer, that's not usually the fault of the mobo, but of the glasstop itself (and a new display with glasstop isn't too expensive; about $50-60 at PDAParts). (I've also got a spare display if you want to check that out before you invest the $.)

Date: 2004-08-24 03:46 pm (UTC)I had this problem (no pen-track, failure to read taps) at one point in the past. The solution was to crack the case and re-seat the two film connectors for the display (both the 4-pad one which, I think, may be the digitizer pick-up and the multi-pad one which drives the display). They get out of whack really easily even under "normal" usage (say, over a year's time or so), and that's the first thing I check whenever I've got a digi problem. I'd t-shoot that first, especially since you say it works when you push on the screen (thus, realigining the pads with the contacts for a moment).
Plus I'd need to score a new case, because the screw posts on mine are broken in two places
PDAParts does not generally have the plastics for the Visor Prism in stock. PalmMedicCanada, on the other hand, does carry the plastics, and (if you read their shipping info) will ship to the US if PDAParts is out of stock or does not carry the part in question. (PMC's price is about $39.00 US for the plastics.)
Good luck!
