Just got an email from a headhunter who saw my resume on Monster. They have a position for an AV Mac Support Technician. At Weill Cornell Medical College - Qatar.

Yes, Qatar. As in the Middle East.

(Ponder) On one paw, the money would be decent, (the Cornell website says hiring range minimum is about US$46,777), it would be tax-free, and would look dammed good on a resume.

On the other hand, being a US citizen working in the Middle East right now may be a bit on the...awkward side. And I suspect they may need to pay a lot more money + benefits for someone to work there. The pay seems moderately low for US standards, but I suspect they bump it up a few notches for expats working on a contract there.

May send in the resume out of curosity if nothing else.

Well, it's certainly not someplace _I_ would want to go but you're male. Good luck! Blessed Be, Angelique

Remember tax free=approx. 25% increase.

Qatar's safe. It's also extremely boring and has a horrible official site with obnoxious Flash graphics. Shadow was sent there for his four days off while he was doing his part in the Sandbox Adventure. (He spent it e-mailing me 4 to 8 times a day).

Why would it be tax-free? My understanding of U.S. tax law is that if you are an American citizen working for a U.S. company (e.g., Cornell), you pay U.S. taxes.

Salary sounds way low in light of this.

You would not have your support base, nor hugging contact with Little Bit.

Yes, send in your resume, get more information, but if I were you, I'd take a pass.

My friend Marty (who now occasionally sends me cool stuff from Oman) spent some time in Qatar.

The cost of living's amazingly cheap, the medical care is... well, paid for by oil profits, :) you can buy cool shit at the suks that you would not BELIEVE, and the expat culture is fairly tightly knit. Qatar isn't as "middle east" as you'd think, but Marty says Oman's a lot friendlier.

If you want, I can ask Marty to give you a holler via email, answer any specific questions you might have.

I think so. I'm thinking of going ahead and writing a letter of interest for the position. I just don't know what questions to ask the interviewer
