Decided to see about local meetups for a couple card games I'm into (Fluxx for example), and see if there's a local SCA meetup as well.

And noticed that every single group I looked at was looking for a organizer.

I'm really starting to think that meetup.com has really shot themselves in the foot. Maybe the people at LiveJournal or OKcupid can make a meetup replacement, because meetup is sinking.

Being co-coordinator of a local group unrelated to that website, I would say I'm not surprised. People around here (it seems) don't want to take responsibility, and don't want to accept responsibility when taking charge. Is this true of other areas? Depends on the subculture or microculture, but in the US today that wouldn't surprise me either.

I'ts not dodging responsibility, it's dodging having to pay $20.00 a month for the privelege.

No, that's not a typo. $20.00 a month.

Do NOT sign up as an organizer. Meetup is definitely a sinking ship. I signed up as an organizer for a group I wanted to get off the ground, and then Meetup decided that they're going to start charging the organizers monthly fees for their groups. If you sign up now, $9 per group per month, price to go up later. In theory it's up to the organizer to pass the hat to the group. Groups without that will get shut down soon. I quit.

I'd recommend looking into stuff like Yahoo groups, or other things like that.

Gee, do ya think?

I got an email from Meetup announcing gleefully that they had made a function for LJ Meetup members to communicate. I laughed and said, "Yeah...it's called Livejournal!". I don't know what crack they're on.

I want to know why they aren't sharing that crack they are apparently on. Bunch of morons.

Reminds me, I really need to get around to stepping down as the LJ Meetup organizer. I'm certainly not going to pay them $9/month for the crap they have now, nor will I ask the members to contribute if they don't have a free option (not to mention the fact that Meetup did not do ANY sort of legal research on the implications of the organizers being responsible for collecting the money and then paying Meetup instead of just charging members directly).

The boardgames meetup (which includes cardgames, including Fluxx) has moved to a SmartGroup. Ask me for the URL when it's not 2AM.

(I was too tired to look for it last night, but I knew if I didn't leave some sort of comment, I'd forget to look for it this morning.)
