Was looking at the information pamphet from Powells Books in Portland.

Lets see. A Bookstore spanning a full city block. Four floors, old and new books together, over 4 million books total. With ATM machines on each floor, providing a direct siphon from my bank account to their coffers.

But all those books!

For a book addict like me, that's like dark chocolate covered double chcolate chip espresso crack flakes with extra crack sprinkled on top.

It is definately heaven. I went up there with my girlfriend this last summer and I _think_ I managed to get away with only a couple of hundred bucks gone...and I was _very_ proud of myself to have managed that. My girlfriend was amused at how proud I was.

Uh-huh. Crackity crack crack.

I'd love to see comparison photos of:
  • your face entering the front door of Powell's
  • [livejournal.com profile] duckflambe's face when he saw me in the push-up bra with pictures of coffee all over it
      Hee!

Yeah, roughly equal I'd say.

Hmmmm....push-up bra with pictures of books all over it.

Really need to drop that line of thought now.....

Mmmmmm. Pictures of attractive lady in pushup bra . . . in bookstore!

Yep, this place sounds like the pure qwill, as Doc Smith used to put it. Ah, books, the heroin you can re-use!

We used to take monthly trips from Seattle to Powells... its about a two hour drive, and SOOOOOO worth it, becuase not only is it the BEST bookstore in teh UNIVERSE... there is no state tax in Oregon.

We would drop hundreds there...

I spent two summers living and working in downtown Portland. Between Powell's World of Books and Powell's Technical Bookstore down the street, I didn't have much cash left over but I did have the entire "Inside Macintosh" collection and the store cat knew me on sight. :)

Oh, they have good coffee too.

And they are right across the street from a bondage store. :)

((I'm wishing I was back in Portland right now...))

Books, technical books, a bdsm store . . . makes me wish I was in Portland for a visit myself. Maybe I will go there someday . . .

The inner librarian in me actually doesnt find Powells to be "all that". When I've gone I've always bought stuff, and I chose them because they have a good variety , but going into the store always leaves me feeling meh.

On the other hand they are on the itenerary for when we go to Portland. or meet in Portland.

I live two hours from Powells, too, and we go at least once a year. Book nirvana (seattlejo, I am a librarian, too, and I find Powells to be the most library-like bookstore I've ever been in).

But Portland is like that. Stores on steroids. If you're into fabric porn, try www.fabricdepot.com

A day in Portland is just havoc on my credit card. Pure havoc.

Unfortunately for me, Portland is a place I've only driven *through* -- so no bookstore nirvana for me. When I'm in San Francisco, this place is the complete and utter death of my bank account.
