When I moved in here, the available DVD collection suddenly tripled. Bad movies aside, I have a rep for movies in general.

Which is why [livejournal.com profile] seattlejo was surprised to find out I've never seen anything by Kevin Smith.

Setting out to correct this educational gap, Deb has so far had me watch "Mallrats" and most of "Dogma", (and I want to watch the rest of that one. Something about Alan Rickman as the voice of God just seems right)

More are on the plan.

Mallrats was WEIRD.

*chuckle*

Chasing Amy is fabulous. As is Jersey Girl. Don't let anyone tell you differently. JG is one of Kevin's favorites.

Clerks and Clerks II.... I'm sure I'm going to hell for laughing at some of the stuff in them, but dammit they're funny.

Paul would try to sell you on the merits of the Jay & Silent Bob cartoon series... he's been trying on me for years, and it still hasn't worked.

We've done Mallrats and most of Dogma, I've got it on request from the library so we can finish it. Next up is likely Chasing Amy and Jersey girl. I'm leaving Clerks, Clerks 2 and Jay and Silent Bob for last.

I like Clerks, but think you need to appreicate Kevin Smith to like it.

Chasing Amy is another must see.

I would also recommend Clerks, if you like it then watch Clerks II.

My personal favorite Kevin Smith movie has to be Chasing Amy... probably because it's actually written about and stars half of the people I know. Actually, it's my belief that Chasing Amy was his best work, bar none.

Dogma's good but I prefer to watch the first half twice because it sort of comes apart halfway through.

If you have the time, check out the deleted scenes from Mallrats. Major plot-lines got cut (which explains some of the weirdness).

"Clerks" scares the fuck out of me.

1. It's too close to reality for rural-suburban NJ. No, it's EXACTLY like that. I remember shopping centers like that. Exactly like that.

2. I could have ended up having people like that as my life-friends if I hadn't left NJ. Exactly.

That movie is, to me, the sound of a bullet that narrowly misses my brain.

OMFG!

Ok, this is bar none the biggest shock to my system I can remember! how the heck did the god of weirdness and hilarity manage to miss seeing these movie gems?

It just boggles the mind.

Love Dogma so much I own it twice. Still kicking myself that I didn't pick up the buddy christ dashboard bobble head when I saw it, and haven't seen since. And George Carlin as a Cardnal... That has to be an unredeamable sin somewhere in catholicism.

Heh - I must buy the DVD of Mallrats, then - I admit, I haven't upgraded my Kevin Smith collection to all DVD yet - but now there's a reason to, if there's more to see, grin.

Once you've digested all the 'regular' Kevin Smith collection - if you like it, there are also 2 'An Evening with Kevin Smith' interview DVDs, where he went to various colleges and takes questions. There's also a Jay and Silent Bob do DeGrassi High - which is even MORE on the strange side - but then I haven't seen enough DeGrassi to be enthralled, which makes them going there ... somewhat strange, but hey! That's what you'd expect from Kevin Smith.

Jersey Girl and Chasing Amy are probably the best 'character' movies - Kevin can really write well for Ben Affleck, it seems. Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back is more along the lines of Mallrats, imo - and definitely watch the deleted scenes and listen to the commentary, which will help explain some of the strange cuts in the movie.

Have fun with the movies, and don't take any of them too seriously (good advice for any movie, actually). I admit, I'm a junkie, and I'd watch/buy/listen to anything Kevin Smith makes - but not everyone appreciates him, grin.
