Granted, KSA and the House of Saud needs to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 19th century. (And a lot of people would be much better off - and freer - without our "friends" the House of Saud and their support of various fundamentalist and radical groups.)

But I can't see how this is going to do anything but destabilize an already unstable region. Still, I wish them luck in their attempt......

New Saudi opposition group formed

"The son of the last ruler of part of present-day Saudi Arabia has said he was setting up an opposition party in Paris to seek democratic rule in the oil-rich kingdom.

Prince Talal Mohammad al-Rashid is son of the last ruler of the independent Rashidi emirate, which reigned in the northwestern region of Hail from 1835 to 1921.

He said on Tuesday: "We announce the birth of the Saudi Democratic Opposition Front, which will struggle by peaceful means for the establishment of democracy in the country."

"The Al-Saud (family ruling Saudi Arabia) must either respect liberties and introduce democracy or give up the power they usurped," Prince Talal, who has been living in exile in France since 1980, told AFP."

Was trying to create a Yahoo avatar last night, and was having no luck in making one that looked exactly like me. Annoyingly enough. (I swear, I have NO luck on avatar systems. At least everyone on Puzzle Pirates looks like Playmobil or Fisher Price......)

That being said, I admit I kinda liked this one.........

Looking at the panel listings for Conjecture, and saw "Islam in Speculative Fiction - From Dune to the Terrorists of Irustan, how have SF/F depictions of Islam changed through the years?"

This got me to thinking seriously about Islam in SF and the future.

Okay, you have a colony ship that's going to take 500+ years to get to a new star system, and it's a one-way trip. Let's argue it's a sleeper ship rather than a generation ship.

The colonalists are all Muslim.

They get to the planet. Now what??

What direction do they face?
How can they cope with the fact that they - or their decendants, can't make the Hajj to Mecca that all Muslims must make during their lives?
How do you know when times for prayer are?
When do you know when Ramadan begins when the moon you need to see to begin it is 500+ years away??
What about the Eld's??
What native animals are unclean??

They would have to seriously consider what it meant to be a Muslim even before they set out *ON* this journey.
