During helicopter mating season, the competing male helicopters attempt to woo the prospective mate with a ritualized aerial dance / challenge. In this, the two challengers fly around each other, both attempting to impress the propective female with their daring and cunning flight patterns. Eventually one forces the other to submit to his proven abilities, and, after staring down the other helicopter, chases the loser away from the area. In the way, the female helicopter can be assured of the male helicopter's fitness and supposed genetic superiority.

Spam Tikka Masala

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cans Spam (Turkey Spam is recommended)
1 cup yogurt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
4 teaspoons salt, or to taste
1 tablespoon butter
1 clove garlic, minced
1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons paprika
3 teaspoons salt, or to taste
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
Cooked jasmine rice

Directions

In a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, 2 teaspoons cumin, cinnamon, cayenne, black pepper, ginger, and 4 teaspoons salt. Stir in Spam, cover, and refrigerate for 1 - 3 hours.

Prepare a skillet for medium heat, lightly oiling it.

Melt butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic and jalapeno for 1 minute. Season with 2 teaspoons cumin, paprika, and 3 teaspoons salt. Stir in tomato sauce and cream. Simmer on low heat until sauce thickens, about 20 minutes. Add Spam, and simmer for 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter, and garnish with fresh cilantro and jasmine rice.

Chimps May Have Used Stone Hammers

"Chimpanzees may have been using stone "hammers" as long as 4,300 years ago. An international research team, led by archaeologist Julio Mercader of the University of Calgary, Canada, said Monday it had uncovered the hammers, dated to that time, in the West African country Ivory Coast. It would be the earliest known use of tools by chimpanzees.

The hammers were used to crack nuts, a behavior still seen in chimps in that area, the researchers said in a paper in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The finding may indicate that a "chimpanzee stone age" began in ancient times, the researchers say.

The earliest reports of stone tool use by chimpanzees in this area date to the writings of Portuguese explorers in the 1600s.

The stones were about the size of cantaloupes with patterns of wear indicating use to crack nuts. The rocks would have been too large for human hands, but about right for the larger, stronger hands of chimpanzees, the researchers said."

They believe she hid somewhere in the park after it closed and managed to find the keys to the cheetah cage.

Animal rights group GAIA called for the immediate closure of the zoo, saying it was unsafe for both visitors and for the cats it is home to."

APPLE PANCAKES

(serving suggestion - serve with chunky applesauce.)

1-1/2 cups whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoon baking powder
2 Tablespoons apple juice concentrate, thawed
3/4 cup lowfat soy milk or regular milk
2 green apples, cored and grated

Mix the flour, salt and baking powder together; mix the apple juice concentrate and milk / soy milk separately.
Add wet ingredients to the dry; add the grated apples and stir gently until well blended.
Spray skillet with vegetable cooking spray and preheat until it is moderately hot.
For each pancake, use about 3 Tablespoons of batter.
Cook 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
