At the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther was presented a table of his theological writings, and asked by Johann Eck, (assisting the Archbishop of Teier), if the writings were his and if he believed what the works taught. Luther requested time to consider his answer, and conducted the next day in prayer and consultation with friends and mediators.
The next day at the Diet, he answered the question such:
"They are all mine, but as for the second question, they are not all of one sort." He then went to elaborate that:
Some books were works that were well recieved by friend and foe alike, and therefore would not be rejected.
Some books were works that detailed abusive behaviours within the Church and Christianity at the time, and therefore he could not reject without encouraging the abuse to continute
Some books were attacks on individuals. He did apologize for the harsh tone, but contended he would only reject them if shown in Scripture he was wrong.
Eck replied that Luther had no right to teach contrary to Chuch teachings, and asked him again if he would reject his books and writings. Luther replied:
"Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason —I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other— my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe." He then supposely uttered the famous phrase
"Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen."Private councils were held to determine Luther's fate. Wisely, Luther left Worms before their decision.
