"Ode to the Lima Bean"
- Flying Fish Sailors

In the Garden of Eden long ago
When Eve she tempted Adam so
There wasn't an apple to be seen
She tempted him with a lima bean
All mankind's sins trace to the root
Not of some forbidden fruit
But to that vegetable small and green
The hideous, loathsome, lima bean

Chorus

The scourge of the Earth is small and green
It's the hideous, loathsome, Lima Bean

The extinction of the dinosaur
Is not a mystery anymore
No giant comet hit the land
To raise a cloud of dust and sand
And block the light of the sun from sight
And changed the day into the night
Oh no they perished when they ate
The deadly lima bean of fate!

Chorus

Bubonic plague killed one in three
In the 16th century
Black death brought Europe to it's knees
And was attributed to fleas
But now respected scientists
Say fleas were not the cause of this
Twas eating lima beans that lead
To the number of Medieval dead.

Chorus

Throughout history we have seen
The influence of this lowly bean
Is it from Satan or sent by God
This powerful humbling deadly pod
It's nor for human hearts to know
Why Satan or God has cursed us so
With this vegetable small and green
The hideous, loathsome, lima bean.

Chorus X2

I have three of their songs in MP3 format - and just ordered the CD. Anyone who can make a happy-sounding song about the 1917 flu pandemic deserves a place in my collection....

Want to borrow the CD??

I can't figure out how anybody could be tempted by a lima bean.

If that question could be answered, we'd know why we were kicked out of Eden.

Unless you believe that the lima bean was punishment for being turned out of paradise in the first place.....

I took it as a challenge a couple of years ago that Duchess Natalya insisted that there was No Way that Even Selene could get her to eat Lima Beans.

Oh, quoth I, Yeah?

So I bought a small sack of them, made a mold and carefully tinted and molded marzipan Lima Beans. A big yummy bowlful of them. She capitulated, gladly. [Your mileage may vary with your liking or disliking of marzipan.]

The rest of the real Lima Beans got used as pie-crust weights so there was no actual wastage of food involved.

So, there was no actual lima bean content eaten? Just lima-bean-shaped marzipan?

Exactly! It was what the medieval folk would call a "subtlety." I did use a real bean to make the mold, but that was it.
