Highway geeking and escape routes

Okay, it looks like we have a serious infestation of the living dead going on. I haven't seen this many glassy eyed soulless horrors since I went though EST training in the 80's.
A couple people already decided to ask me questions about escape routes, using my old highway knowledge.
San Diego
San Diego county has a couple major problems. Namely the county has major bottlenecks leading in and out.
North - You have two major options, I-5 and I-15. I-5 has Camp Pendleton to deal with, and the base may be in lockdown. If you can make it to the view point north of the rest areas and Las Pulgas road, break the fence and go north on the old portion of US-101 that the state beach uses.
I-15, you can use a lot of ex US-395 from Escondido on, but you're going to have bottlenecks. Be careful. You can also use Pala Road (76) to S16 to leave from either I-15 or Escondido.
A minor route is 67 to Ramona, then 78. You can follow 78 out to the East, or head north on 76.
East - I-8 is your main route, but a LOT of old US-80 is in excellent shape. At Descanso, you can use 79 to meet up with 78. However, past Jacumba, you'll have to meet up with I-8 again. Big bottleneck.

Los Angeles
North and East of Los Angeles, you again have bottlenecks. Hwy 1, US 101, I-5, I-15, and I-80.
There's jack that can be done with Hwy 1 or US 101 really. I-5 though, well, check out http://www.ridgeroute.com/ for possible routes out. Much of ex US-99 is still in place, but Pyramid Lake is gonna be the PITA portion to get by
Which reminds me, I-210 is gonna be a zoo. Try ex US-66 or portions of ex US-99
Same goes for I-15. If you can get past Cajon Pass, then you can use Route 66 to get to Barstow.
I-10 east follows portions of ex 99, and parts of 99 are drivable. DON'T GET CAUGHT IN DEAD ENDS!!! They may end up being all too real.

Oh, that's good, that's just so good!
Dead ends...
Hehehehehehe...
Of course, once you do get caught (it is, of course, inevitable), come visit your new brothers and sisters over at

Rt. 66? I dunno, I mean, Foothill is a zoo under normal rush-hour conditions. Unless I-10 or I-210 is at a *ahem* dead stop, I'd suggest staying on the freeway.
Any suggestions for going east from the San Bernardino Valley area, for those who don't want to go north (i.e. over the Cajon Pass)? The only other ways I know of are over the mountains or out I-10.
If you survive the zombies, this is good info to squirrel away in case of other events causing one to want to evac.

Date: 2007-06-13 11:18 pm (UTC)I'm not sure it's safe for me to head out of Fullerton, but I don't think I'm going to have much of a choice here soon. I'm thinking if I move along the train tracks I'll at least have a decent line of sight.

Date: 2007-06-14 12:02 am (UTC)But let us say that you are correct and that the only way to avoid zombies is to flee north and the 1, 101, 5, and 15 are all congested. The little known answer is to take Angeles Crest Highway over the mountains to Palmdale and then get on the 14 and go north to either Mammoth or to Tahoe. There you can go skiing and have fun, as zombies don't like snow and will freeze, plus they have problems with properly tightened ski straps.
